Path on Waterway 22

Waterway 22 is located on the north shore of Lake Union in Seattle's Fremont and Wallingford Neighborhoods. It is located near the junction of N. Stone Way and N. Northlake Way. The site is also close to the Burke Gilman trail and to a growing retail area with restaurants and cafes.

Waterway 22 currently has an informal sidewalk/path that is regularly traversed by the public. The site itself is situated on a steep bank that has been neglected over the years with a lot of invasive plantlife. The site is home to a number of blackberry bushes and ivy, and is often littered with garbage. The site has one of the best views of downtown Seattle and offers the neighborhood a slice of what makes Seattle one of the greatest cities in US.

Our current project focuses on a parcel named Waterway 22 at the intersection of Stone Way North and North Northlake Way. As it sits, the site currently is overgrown and fully covered in invasive species with no access to the public.

The parcel of land is owned by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources. Washington DNR has granted FONLU permission to conduct investigatory studies for potential improvements on the environmental condition of Waterway 22.

Our organization hopes to eventually fully restore the site and provide green space along the waterfront accessible by the public.

FONLU has been working with the City of Seattle's Department of Neighborhoods to begin the initial steps toward a permanent solution to the site. FONLU has been awarded a Neighborhood Matching Fund Grant to conduct a preliminary geotechnical assessment of the site to assess potential restoration plans for the site. FONLU has chosen Landau Associates to create the report on Waterway 22. The grant also is funding two public meetings to discuss possible plans and uses for the site.

Other waterways in the area include Waterway 20, Waterway21, and Waterway 23. Waterway 20 is another neglected site located on the western end of Gasworks Park, between the Seattle Police Harbor Patrol and Center for Wooden Boats. The site is currently closed off to the public and overgrown with invasive plants. Waterway 21 located between Waterway 20 and Waterway 22 is a boardwalk overlooking the water. The site often accumulates trash. Waterway 23 is an example of a fully restored waterway. It is located west of Waterway 22 under Highway 99. The site also features a floating dock to launch canoes and kayaks.
